Book Review of
I Love Those Earrings

By Jane Merrill and Chris Filstrup

From Schiffer Publishing *$59.99 * 9 ½” x 12 ½” * Hardback with Dust Cover * 224 pages * 300 Color Photos *No Index

This book takes a look at the beautiful types of jewelry that enables a woman to make a statement about herself. These fabulous items were first worn to chase off evil spirits. The time periods range from the Byzantine and Medieval times to today’s modern era.

The book leads off with the explanation of the importance of the earrings. Historical time periods are explored starting with the Celts and Dacians and continuing thru the Renaissance, 18th century, French Empire, Romanticism, Micro- Architecture, Mid 20th Century, 1960s and up to present day.

Throughout each time period is an explanation of how history influenced designs. Popular women are illustrated with the types of earrings they wore. Historical photos of these woman are used. The captions describe the ladies and the source where the info came from.

The designers of this jewelry are explored in the Contemporary Art chapter. Earrings 101 is the last chapter and describes the different ways that the earrings are attached. It gives you ways to determine the age of the earrings.

While the book was full of information, it was disappointing to not have an index that would have provided an easy way of locating specific information. There are some gorgeous earrings made out of many different natural stones and precious metals. All of these pieces were exquisite to look at. Many famous people are shown wearing their favorite pieces. This made a nice addition to this book.
